Uchi Deshi
What is an Uchi Deshi?
The term Uchi Deshi is Japanese for “live-in student”, totally immersing themselves in “The Way”. Traditionally, an uchi deshi would apprentice him or herself to a master teacher and live in the dojo or the home of the teacher, serving them all day every day. Today, many people referred to as uchi deshi do not actually live in the dojo but the term is still used to distinguish full-time apprentices from part-time students.
An uchi deshi's training does not only take place on the mats but through the way an uchi deshi conducts their daily life, he or she strives to cultivate a greater understanding of martial techniques and spirit. Being a traditional Uchi Deshi means that he or she works closely with and will learn more than martial arts skills from a true Sensei. A person applying for Uchi Deshi status should understand that this commitment is not to be taken lightly. It is very intensive and the hardships will be even greater. Training, the dojo and Soke's needs will be the top priority for the Uchi deshi.
Training is to be the top priority in the Uchi Deshi’s life no matter how boring or
mundane it may seem. Our program integrates training full time and the Uchi
Deshi students should approach their training as if a true Samurai warrior.
Students applying for an Uchi Deshi position should consider the decision carefully. Their responsibilities will not be the same as their fellow students they come in contact with. The Uchi Deshi life will have very few distractions. The
lifestyle is dedicated to understanding the true art of Jugoshin Ryu Jujutsu. The dedication to the arts is the highest priority in the Uchi Deshi’s life.
The Uchi Deshi should reduce social activities and notify friends and family of
temporary need for isolation. A person should be ready to make a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.
