MENKYO SYSTEM

In the art of Jugoshin Ryu Jujutsu we use the menkyo system to recognize a students knowledge and progression. We have decided NOT to use the popular KYU/DAN system as we feel that it has become diluted and abused and everyone nowadays seems to be a "high" dan rank. The use of the menkyo system brings us closer to the ancient ways and puts the focus on attaining knowledge and mastering martial arts and not on accumulating dan ranks.

The Menkyo system which is the warrior ranking system dates back to the 8th century and it was what was used before the Kyu/Dan system was developed by Master Jigoro Kano (founder of Judo). Schools had between 3 and 5 total levels within a specific menkyo system, more levels could also be included in each major level to designate further achievement depending on the Jujutsu school. Many of the techniques are considered Kuden – to be transmitted orally and never written down. Normally these ranks weren't indicated in anyway, but plaques (Nafudakake) would hang on dojo walls indicating level with the students name.

We use the following menkyo system in the art of Jugoshin Ryu Jujutsu:

Kirigami

Menkyo Shoden

Menkyo Kaiden: A license of total transmission
