Soto Deshi
What is a Soto Deshi?
The term Soto Deshi is Japanese for “outside student”, totally immersing themselves in “The Way”. The Sotodeshi program is designed for local students who cannot commit to a full-time Uchideshi program. Being a traditional Soto Deshi student means that he or she, trains, works, and will learn more than martial arts skills from a true Sensei of budo. A person applying for Soto Deshi status should understand that this commitment is not to be taken lightly. It is very intensive and the hardships will be even greater. Training, the dojo and Soke
s needs are the top priority of the Sotodeshi.
Training is to be the top priority in the Soto Deshi’s life no matter how boring or mundane it may seem. Our program integrates training full time and the Soto Deshi students should approach their training as if a true Samurai warrior.
Students applying for a Soto Deshi position should consider the decision carefully. Their
responsibilities will not be the same as their fellow students they come in contact with. The Soto Deshi life will have very few distractions. The lifestyle is dedicated to understanding the true art of Jugoshin Ryu Jujutsu. The dedication to the arts is the highest
priority in the Soto Deshi’s life. A person should be ready to make a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.
